Sumba

These images date from the early 80's, and are mainly from West Sumba. Sumbanese culture is pretty much megalithic, many of their origin myths orient towards the west - Asia, and the islands west of Sumba. The Pasola not-so-mock battle between wooden spear carrying horsemen is related to their wet rice culture which is most likely predated by an older, megalithic, dry rice culture. Sumbanese learn to ride almost before they can walk, and their traditions are watched over by a council of priests known as Ratos. I spent many months over several trips on the island, and retain many colorful memories of those days before phones, faxes, and paved roads.
